Ah, youth. Remember the days when your skin was soft, no blemishes, strong hair, strong bones and limbs? And what about the vision? Remember when you didn’t have to squint to see objects far away or hold reading material at a reasonable distance instead of wishing you could extend your arms so you can read the fine print?

And what causes these maladies as we grow old? We don’t age, our cells age. If we had a way to keep our cells from aging and dying out, we would never age. But our bodies are constantly bombarded by destructive free radicals that cause aging in our cells and DNA. As we age, certain genes begin to fade due to free radical damage causing our vision to get blurry. The cornea loses flexibility and becomes stiffer, the leading steps to various forms of refractive errors. These conditions are corrected through eyeglasses, contact lenses or Utah LASIK.

There are three primary types of refractive error:

Myopia (nearsightedness) is an eyesight abnormality resulting from the eye’s refractive inability to see distant object clearly.

Hyperopia (farsightedness) is an eyesight abnormality resulting from the eye’s refractive inability to focus on small objects such as print material without the use of corrective reading glasses or bifocals.

Astigmatism occurs when the cornea has an irregular curvature. A normal cornea is smooth and equally curved in all directions, and light entering the cornea is focused equally in all directions. With astigmatism, objects have a wavy distortion because of they eye’s inability to focus light rays to a point.

The three primary refractive errors are correctable through eyeglasses, contact lenses and Utah LASIK surgery. There are a variety of different types of lasers for LASIK surgery. While all LASIK is used with a laser, there are a number of different manufacturers for the tools that perform the basic procedure. Over the years as LASIK surgery has evolved into a procedure that literally takes minutes, various manufacturers offer a variety of state-of-the-art technologies. While the procedure is basically, the same, a laser is used to make corrections and cuts in the cornea rather than using a blade.

While Utah LASIK is a common procedure, it is not for everyone. A candidate for LASIK surgery must qualify for the procedure because there are some pre-existing conditions that will disqualify a candidate from having LASIK performed. Some pre-existing conditions are the person’s age, general health and more specifically, candidates free from disease whether general or eye related. People with glaucoma and cataracts cannot have LASIK. A candidate with a compromised immune system may not qualify. A candidate must have a stabilized eye prescription for at least two years.

The most important responsibility for a LASIK candidate is to do their due diligence in finding the right surgeon and clinic. There is a plethora of technicians in the market place and it is important to interview doctors and check credentials, background, experience and success rate…even the unsuccessful cases. Be diligent.

Did you know that one-half of all working Americans suffer from back pain symptoms each year? Back pain is one of the most common reasons for missed work. Back pain is the second most common reason for visits to the doctor’s office. The first most common reason is for upper-respiratory infections. Most cases of back pain are caused by accidents or mechanical reasons for pulled or strained muscles. Americans spend at least $50 billion each year on back pain. Experts estimate that as many as 80 percent of the population will experience a back problem at some time in our lives.

A past survey commission by the American Chiropractic Association showed that more than 80 percent of chronic back pain sufferers surveyed, preferred to avoid medication to teat their back pain. The survey showed that 64 percent of the respondents said they would consider seeing a Utah chiropractor or a chiropractor in their area. The survey also showed that only 13.8 percent of the respondents were currently treated for their back pain. While many respondents preferred to treat their ailments without drugs, most were taking either a prescription pain killer, muscle relaxer or over-the-counter medication to deal with their pain.

A Utah chiropractor will treat back pain through manipulation to help relax the muscles and ease the pain. Spinal manipulation is the only safe and effective method of relieving pain without resorting to medication.

Here are a few tips to prevent back pain:

Maintain a healthy diet, keep weight down.

Be active and exercise at least three times a week.

Avoid prolonged inactivity or bed rest.

Warm up and stretch before exercising or participating in other physical activities.

Maintain proper posture.

Wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes.

Sleep on a mattress of medium firmness to minimize any curve in your spine.

Lift objects with your knees, keep it close to your body and do not twist while lifting.

Quit smoking. Smoking impairs blood flow, resulting in oxygen and nutrient deprivation to the spinal tissues.

Work with your chiropractor to make sure that your workstation is ergonomically correct.

Weight loss, exercise and diet are key factors to limiting the possibility of injuring your back. Other important factors include warming up before exercising, quit smoking and sleep on a medium firm comfortable mattress. While we want to make changes in our life, it is important to take action to actually make those changes. That doesn’t mean to become a Weekend Warrior and squeeze a year’s work of exercise in a few days. Start your program slowly and gradually build up your strength as well as make certain changes in your diet. The rewards will follow if you are consistent with your positive actions and make them into daily habits.

Seeing a Utah chiropractor for a regular tune up for the body and back is also a good way to avoid serious back injuries. Keep the body in shape and relaxed to avoid back injuries.

Back pain is one of the hazardous that everyone adult experiences at least once in their life. It could be from an accident, a sprain or a medical condition such as pinched nerve, arthritis or herniated disc. Traditional remedies such as painkillers or muscle relaxers may do the trick in helping to relieve the pain. In more extreme cases, a risk back surgery may be the last resort to relieve pain. It depends on the on the severity of the pain and degree of suffering the patient is sill to endure.

Now, there is a fairly recent advancement in non-surgical back pain relief through Utah spinal decompression, a method used in Utah and across the states to relieve pressure on the back. It is painless, requires no surgery, less costly than surgery and approved by the FDA and clinical research reveals that it has an 86 percent success ratio.

Non-surgical spinal decompression made its appearance in 1991 as the Vax-D. Developed by Dr. Allan Dyer, famous for inventing the cardiac defibrillator, a device that has saved millions of lives around the world, introduced the device in 1985. It was controlled by a pneumatic system that gradually released with traction force, pressure on the discs to reduce back pain and pain from muscle spasms. A more enhanced version called the G2, replaced the pneumatic technology with more precise electrically driven components through an on board computer control system. Back pain and pressure on the delicate nerves and discs can be incrementally relieved with more control.

The patient is firmly strapped on a spinal decompression table which is controlled by the on board computer. The doctor enters information on the personalized treatment and the table finds the right position for the patient to apply force and create the right spinal decompression, releasing the pressure affecting spinal discs and nerves. Utah spinal decompression as well as across the nation has become a popular method of delivering relief for collapsed discs and injured nerves. The negative pressure enables the herniated disc to finally retract into its natural position so that oxygen and nutrient rich blood flow inside the spinal discs to facilitate natural healing. The new technology also allows the doctor to program the computer to make adjustments to the patient’s posture for more of less pressure in specific areas for decompression into deeper areas of the spinal discs and tissues.

A series of 20-28 procedures that take 30-45 minutes is the usual course of treatments. Doctors highly recommend a few changes in lifestyle to aid in faster healing. A good exercise plan to strengthen muscles is highly recommended. Change the diet to lose weight and relieve pressure on the discs is another recommendation.

As technology improves, Utah spinal decompression can provide safe, non-invasive treatment but it is not permanent. It will provide pain relief on a temporary basis. While this is a less costly treatment, it does not always replace the permanent results of surgery which is not always the final answer either.

The tabloid¬¬s and entertainment news shows are filled with features on celebrities having breast implants. Interest in Salt Lake City breast augmentation and across the nation is a hot topic on a daily basis. Popular shows on cable channels are solely dedicated plastic surgeons who provide services to women wanting breast augmentation. The majority of women want larger breasts. Some need a reduction and many need more of a lift to give their figure new life.

If you are considering getting breast implants, there are a few considerations that you should contemplate before making a decision. The big question and one of the great debates is whether to place the breast implant over or under the sub-pectoral muscle.

Sub-glandular placement means the implant is placed beneath the breast tissue and skin, but over the pectoral muscle. This is commonly referred to as “Over the Muscle”.

Sub-muscular placement means the implant is placed between the pectoralis major and the pectoralis minor muscles. This is commonly referred to as “Under the Muscle”.

During the early days Salt Lake City breast augmentation and across the nation, the normal placement was always sub-glandular. The major problem with breast implants at the time was consistent hardness caused by the body’s natural rejection of the foreign body by forming a fibrous membrane consisting of myofibrils and collagen known as a capsule. When the capsule contracts around the implant giving the implant a hard feeling to the touch. This is commonly as, “fibrous capsular contracture”. As a result of this, doctors chose to place implants between the pectoral major and pectoral minor muscles.

Placing the implants over the pectoral muscle also tended to produce sagging over time because the only support was the breast tissue and the skin. Eventually, gravity won and breasts began to sag as well as felt hard to the touch. When the implants are placed between the major and minor pectoral muscles, the breast retains a more natural look and feel.

Another consideration is to choose whether the implants are saline or silicone. Women want breasts that are natural in appearance and touch; so when it comes to choosing between saline (composed primarily of saltwater) or silicone (composed of a plastic gel-like substance) implants, the patient should discuss the pros and cons of these two choices.

In the early days, silicone implants were leaking the substance into the body and were replaced by the saline implants. In 2005, the ban was lifted when silicone implants were permitted to come back to the market. Each choice has its pros and cons just as breast implant placement has its pros and cons.

It is important to discuss the parameters of selection with your surgeon and find out the best choices for your body and structure. While many women want larger breasts, it is important that Salt Lake City breast augmentation is proportional to the body. It is important that the woman makes the final decision for herself rather than what someone else wants.

A new business starts with an idea for a new product or a service that an entrepreneur feels will do well in the market place. In many cases, the entrepreneur is skilled in the industry and has the expertise and background to manufacture or market the newest, widget that will take the world by storm. But here’s the chink in the armor: the entrepreneur does not have the financial expertise to carry the business through the long haul, unless the product is in the financial service or industry.

As the business idea is crystallized and the company starts to grow, entrepreneurs need to expand their financial and accounting services that are either developed in-house or it is outsourced to a financial contractor. Either way, at this point in time, it is advisable that the entrepreneur relies on CFO services to help handle the growth. Better yet, it is wise for the entrepreneur to consider the financial aspect before the business actually starts.

In most cases, CFO services are considered an expensive proposition, especially at the planning stages of the business. If planning for the eventual need of this service, it will provide a better and smoother transition when growth starts to occur. Once the business generates revenues and reasonable cash flow, the company will undoubtedly need guidance on the financial strategies for future potential growth. A comprehensive business plan is essential for efforts to raise money through a loan or other methods of raising capital.

As the new business continues to grow and expansion is needed, the accounting system can go through a series of changes to accommodate the burgeoning business. By planning ahead, contracting for part time consultation to design an accounting system that will easily grow with the company would be a smart investment. A business plan and developing a checks and balances system to accommodate the growth would be another great investment. This kind of pre-planning or for future expansion will help when it is actually needed. Streamline for the future is a step that many entrepreneurs forget or dismiss because it’s too far in the future.

If the entrepreneur thinks ahead of the game, obtaining part time consultation with an independent CFO contractor will help control future costs. The initial planning stages will provide a smoother transition in the future. As the company stabilizes and needs to hire a full time CFO, temporary CFO services is the right choice for handling all administrative and financial decisions while the entrepreneur expands the front lines of innovative manufacturing and marketing. This kind of symbiotic relationship is valuable to the entrepreneur because it allows for time and room to focus on developing new products and services while the back room is taking care of the rest. A CFO is an integral element in keeping transitions smooth from one stage to the next. As a word to the wise, taking these steps before starting the business could be the best move possible to ensure a streamlined and highly successful company.

Spring is here and it is making its way into our every day lives. Just look out the window and the snow is melting–in some areas, too fast. But you’ll notice that you’re using the furnace less and less, which is good news.

Here’s a quick question: when did you last change the filter in your furnace? Here’s another question: isn’t it time to think about servicing your air conditioner? Now may be the best time to contact your Utah heating and air conditioning contractor for a maintenance call to check your air conditioner and make sure it will run efficiently over the approaching summer months. The best savings usually occur now before it gets into the hot season when service prices usually rise with the temperature.

Early air conditioner maintenance can prevent many small problems from becoming much bigger problems, which equal expensive problems later on. If your air conditioner check up is scheduled for spring, you can also beat the long waits and higher prices that come with peak season Utah heating and air conditioning repair visits.

There are many reasons to schedule an annual air conditioner maintenance with your local contractor but the most important reason is to save money. For starters, you greatly increase the chances that your air conditioning technician will find small problems before they become big ones by scheduling regular check ups. In addition, the regular check up assures you that your system is running efficiently which means savings on your monthly utility bills.

Here’s another way to save a lot of money: if your air conditioning unit needs to be replaced, get it now so you can take advantage of the $1500 tax credit that the Federal Government offers until the end of the year. Check with the state and your utility company for additional tax breaks or rebates.

It is important to have effective heating and air conditioning systems that run efficiently during the seasons when we need human comfort in our environment. An inefficient system is detrimental to the environment and to the wallet. In either case, suffering from extremes of the seasons can be unhealthy and harmful to the inhabitants. A heating and air conditioning system that breaks down during peak winter or summer months can be costly in human comfort and to the budget. So, a word to the wise is to keep everything running efficiently to save money and maintain the human comfort quotient.

Some other money saving tips for the homeowner is to change filters on a regular basis. There are very inexpensive filters in the market but these should be changed every month. A more expensive model has higher durability and can be changed every three months or so. The main thing is to keep the filters clean for a cleaner indoor environment. Changing filters will lessen dust in the house as well as keep allergens at bay. Contact your local Utah heating and air conditioning company for a comprehensive maintenance check. Stay cool.

It is estimated that 80 percent of adults will experience severe low back paint at some point in their lives. While pain in the lower back can be excruciating, you can correct this ailment by learning how to bend, lift walk and sit correctly. It is through adjustments by your chiropractor in Colorado Springs or in offices across the nation and proper exercises at home, on your own, that you can achieve a healthy back without using painkillers or muscle relaxers.

Most people experience back pain through simple strains. Exercises to strengthen the muscle that supports the spine together with back exercises will help to keep the spine in a healthy state. The muscles that brace the backbone are in constant use even while you are simply sitting. The muscles are in use just to keep our body erect and from falling over. The spine can also bend, straighten and twist, providing continuing stress on the back part of our body. This constant movement and stress on the lower back muscles makes this area vulnerable to stain and injury. This is the reason we must protect our lower back by learning how to lift objects correctly and knowing the physical limitations in using the back muscles. Education by your chiropractor in Colorado Springs and physical therapist on certain exercises to strengthen the back and core muscles will prevent strains to the lower back area. It is important to stay focused on not straining the back.

If for some reasons, there is a strain, taking painkillers and muscle relaxers only mask the real reason for the ailment. It is important to seek help from a chiropractor in terms of adjustments to the spine to relieve neck pain and lower back pain. If an injury is more severe such as a herniated disc, the inflamed area needs a series of adjustments and possible treatment through spinal decompression.

Spinal decompression treatments will take pressure off the herniated discs for a natural method of healing. Through this therapy, the pressure on the disc is relieved by suspending the patient in an anti-gravity like state. The pressure on the discs is lessened, giving the nerves and disc in the spinal column a chance to become oxygenated and blood flow in and around the area. In other words, the area that has been deprived of free flowing circulation creates inflammation and severe pain. Spinal decompression provides a more natural environment for healing.

It is important to treat your back problems in a conservative manner. Bear in mind that surgery is not always the best answer for eliminating lower back pain. Approach treating back pain from a holistic perspective, rather than relying on drugs for fast relief. In some cases, it is difficult to be clear headed about it but rest and relaxation is the first way to help an aching back. A visit to your chiropractor in Colorado Springs for a diagnosis and adjustment is the next bit of advice. Take it easy and heal naturally.

Sometimes grown children need to help their parents as they become elderly and are no longer able to navigate effectively at home. These days, many elderly prefer to stay home rather than go into an assisted living situation or to a nursing home. While this preference is becoming more popular since older people are still able to function within their home, it is necessary for caregivers to obtain medical equipment for in home use through a Utah medical equipment provider or providers across the nation.

If an ill person is unable to walk but needs to be moved around the home, a caregiver can ask the physician for a wheelchair, which is considered durable medical equipment. There are three classifications of wheelchairs that Medicare and most health insurance will cover. First, the patient will qualify to rent a standard wheelchair or may qualify for a motorized wheelchair if the person is not able to self-propel the chair.

Durable medical equipment refers to a host of different medical devices or equipment that may be used for people receiving care outside the hospital. These devices are designed for use more than once and for the duration of a person’s illness. The medical equipment can be split into certain groups depending on type and may include inexpensive items that are easy to buy at a Utah medical equipment supplier and across the nation. The equipment may also include regular services, prosthetics, items with limited use periods, and oxygen and oxygen supplies.

Some medical equipment is only needed for a short time, some medical equipment is needed for a longer period of time. A health insurance company may or may not help cover the cost of the equipment. Medicare must cover certain things associated with durable medical equipment in accordance with prescriptions written or recommended by a doctor. Any of these items such as hospital beds, porta-toilets, transport devices and medical supplies are available through an authorized Utah medical equipment provider. Some of the equipment is available for rent or purchase.

If you are in a position where durable medical equipment is needed at home for in-home health care, contact a local medical equipment provider for product and prices. In some cases, used equipment such as walkers, wheelchairs, shower benches, canes, exercise bikes, hospital beds, motorized scooters and bed rails may be available through senior care centers either for purchase or through a lending program. Check with a local center for availability and information.

While it is economical to rent or access equipment through a lending program, some people may prefer to purchase medical equipment new which is always available through a retail establishment.

It all depends on how far the caregiver or the stay-at-home patient needs and qualifies for durable medical equipment that will be covered by Medicare of an insurance company. But keep in mind that down the line, this equipment will no longer be used for a number of reasons. What happens then? Think of a recycling program for future use.

What are the most memorable slogans in American advertising campaigns? Some campaigns are only remembered by the words while the products are long forgotten. For instance, what fast food company had the question, “Where’s the beef?” What about, “I can’t believe I ate the whole thing”? Who could ever forget, “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up”?

The third slogan was as popular when it was first created in the 1980′s as it is now. The Baby Boomers grew up with that slogan, perhaps laughed at it, but are they laughing now? Utah home medical equipment is as ubiquitous now as it was then and probably remembered with more purpose these days by the aging Baby Boomers who are currently and increasingly become the elder generation. Growing into grandparent-hood or approaching this generation continues to expand, increasing the demand for medical devices such as a medical alarm to contact authorities in case of a fall or accident in the home.

There are a number of medical alert devices that communicate to emergency agencies through a telephone line. The caveat is a required subscription for this service. The next generation of this kind of medical alert is a portable personal emergency response system that works throughout the house, eliminates costly monthly subscriptions and expedites emergency calls.

The Guardian Alert 911 is available through Utah home medical equipment suppliers and throughout the country. Unlike earlier generations alert technology, this device addresses major issues in the market such as:

A two-way speakerphone pendant that allows direct conversation with the emergency operator.

No monthly fees. The device is purchased at an affordable price, eliminating cost monthly subscriptions.

The device offers farther range of several hundred than the traditional 30 feet in a limited space. The device is worn as a pendant and offers complete coverage in and around the house where accidents and injuries frequently occur.

Easy to use, one button activation.

Water resistant and wearable in the tub or the shower.

Expedites calls directly to 911 operators.

This breakthrough product is a tremendous boon to families of the elderly, giving everyone peace of mind in 911 emergency response calls. It is portable and lightweight and allows direct two-way communication with a 911 emergency operator at the touch of a button. Even if the elder person is unable to speak, the device alerts the emergency operator who can then identify the caller’s location through caller ID. Immediate help is dispatched to the location. The device simply plugs into a phone jack.

The device is more convenient than carrying a cell phone. It is worn as a pendant, lightweight and convenient. A cell phone, while convenient, is not always available and inconvenient to wear, and it’s not water resistant.

So while advertising slogans are long forgotten, this device, available through Utah home medical equipment suppliers, will keep the slogan, “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” alive and well. By the way, the other advertisers were Wendy’s and Alka-Seltzer.

If your air conditioning system is getting on in years, it’s time to think about making some changes and the sooner the better. Here’s why it is best not to procrastinate on this decision. The federal government is offering $1500 in tax credits when consumers purchase new energy efficient appliances or take steps to make energy efficient renovations to the home. The tax credits for these changes will expire on December 31, 2010.

This is based on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and you can now take advantage of the Federal tax credit for replacement heating and air conditioning Salt Lake City and across the nation. Tax credits are available for up to 30% of the cost or up to $1500 in 2009 and 2010 for existing homes only for:

HVAC — heating and air conditioning systems

Windows and Doors

Insulation

Roofs (metal and asphalt)

Water Heaters (non-solar)

Biomass stoves

Tax credits are available at 30% of the cost, with no upper limit through 2016 for existing homes and new construction for:

Geothermal heat pumps

Solar panels

Solar water heaters

Small wind energy systems

Fuel cells

Q: What is a tax credit?

A: A tax credit reduces the amount of tax you have to pay. If you owe $1000 in taxes at the end of the year and you get a $500 tax credit, then you will only owe $500. If you are getting a refund at the end of the year, you can still most likely collect the entire tax credit. Your accountant can fill you in on the details.

And if you don’t need to replace your air conditioning system just yet, it is important to keep it maintained for a longer life so there are no breakdowns or disruption of service during the hot days of summer, which are approaching faster than you think. Air conditioning Salt Lake City during the summer months is essential. Make sure the filters are changed at least every couple of months if not every month. This will cut down dust and allergens circulating in the air.

Here are a few tips on maintenance:

Keep the area around the air conditioner free of foliage and tall grass. Keep the area uncluttered so there’s enough space for air circulation; however, it is important to have the unit in a shady area.

Keep the filter clean through the season either by cleaning it or replacing it. It depends on the kind of filter you use.

Keep the registers unobstructed by furniture or clutter inside the home to create good circulation and air flow.

Don’t set your thermostat at a colder setting than normal. It doesn’t cool any faster and could result in excessive cooling which can drive up the energy bills.

Have the system checked by a heating and air conditioning Salt Lake City service company.

Follow these tips for a cool and prosperous summer.
